Underground fungal life to be mapped for the first time

In an effort to tackle climate change, scientists are on a mission to map the world’s vast underground fungal network for the first time. The Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) has initiated this “underground conservation” project to identify hotspots that could better protect natural ecosystems and store carbon dioxide.

“Just below our feet lies an invaluable ally in mitigating climate change – vast hidden fungal networks,” Jeremy Grantham, who has pledged 98 percent of his net worth to fight the climate crisis, said in the press release.
