Career as an AI Ethics researcher – Inspiration from Aparna Ashok

Artificial Intelligence or AI is a technology that pervades all aspects of human society. There is no escape from it, today or tomorrow.

“Unfortunately, as a 2018 MIT study puts it, “there’s a big gap between how AI can be used and how it should be used”. The study stated while 30 percent of large companies in the US are actively deploying AI applications, not many of them have a concrete plan to ensure their ethical fairness” writes Shraddha Goled in her article for Analytics India Magazine.

The need to build AI technologies on a solid ethical ground is urgent and more important than ever before. Hence, AI Ethics research is a growing career opportunity. Ethics research is a field that studies and ensures ethical use of any technology.

To help you understand what a career as an AI ethics researcher looks like, we introduce you to Aparna Ashok. Aparna is an AI Ethics researcher and a tech anthropologist. She was named in the Lighthouse3’s list of ‘100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics’ for 2020.
