In conversation with Mathematician Neena Gupta, winner of the Ramanujan Prize 2021

Prof Neena Gupta, a mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, has been awarded the Ramanujan Prize 2021 for young mathematicians from developing countries. She also has India’s most prestigious award for science and technology, ‘The Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award’, to her credit.

Prof. Gupta’s work “shows impressive algebraic skill and inventiveness,” as stated by the DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize committee, comprised of distinguished mathematicians from across the world.

In an interview with edugraph, she talks about her journey in mathematics, how she chose Affine Algebraic Geometry and Commutative Algebra as a specialisation, and what inspires her to work relentlessly.

“Now it’s just not me continuing research — I have to go along with my students. I guide them as well as learn from them every day. This is a continuous mutual learning process. The awards that come in between are helpful because they help researchers feel that someone is recognising their work. Such recognition is very important not only because they inspire us to follow our passion but also set rewarding examples before young researchers.” – Prof Gupta.
